Our Favourite South Island Golf Courses

Our Favourite South Island Golf Courses

As Christmas rolls around, many of us are looking forward to a summer break. So, with some holidays up our sleeve and longer evenings, it’s the perfect time to explore some new courses.

Here are three of our favourite places to play golf, in the South Island.

Amberley Golf Club, North Canterbury
An easy 30 minute drive north of Christchurch, this 18 hole course is a gem. The course runs adjacent to the wild Amberley beach and if you love the sound of surf as you stroll up the fairway, this is the course for you. And if you fall in love with the course, you can even stay, as the club offers campervan sites all with the cost of your green fees.

The Cairns Golf Club, Tekapo
You will have to keep your wits about you playing here as the views are a complete and utter distraction. Aoraki Mt Cook and Lake Tekapo in one direction and rugged tussock plains in the other. This fun, links-designed golf course, with two tee blocks per green allow you to play a full 18-hole round, is certainly unique. Rabbits, the odd sheep and plenty of birdlife will be keeping an eye on you so best you bring your ‘A’ game. Watch out for the natural hazards…. rabbit holes!

St Clair Golf Club, Dunedin
Another course that requires all your powers of concentration is St Clair. High up on the cliffs above St Clair Beach Dunedin, this 18 hole course will keep you fully entertained both for its views and the golfing experience. We last played here when the wind nearly lifted us up, but it all added to an amazing experience.

Summer golf means extra thought to sunscreen and clothing. Consider sunsleeves if you get tired of reapplying sunscreen and of course, a cap or bucket hat is essential to provide protection to your face, ears and neck.

Your clothing choices for summer golf make such a difference to your comfort levels. No one likes that sticky feeling so choose lightweight breathable fabrics such as cotton or merino for your skort, dress or polo.

And lastly, stay hydrated and keep that water handy.

We’d love to hear about your favourite places to play too, so drop us a line and tell us about those hidden gems.

Happy exploring and happy golfing this summer
